Whether you read poetry or not you can’t deny that it’s around all of us. Poetry is all over the music that we listen to, and it’s also the foundation of great literature. In 1996, the Academy of American Poets started National Poetry Month, which has become a literary celebration for writers, poets publishers, and libraries around the world.

Here are five ways to celebrate National Poetry Month while you’re staying at home this month:

Create your own poetry book or chapbook.

Have a collection of poems you’ve written that you’ve been holding on to forever? Take this month to polish them up, put them together in a book, and self-publish them on Amazon Kindle Direct or Lulu. Self-publishing a poetry book is the easiest it’s ever been, thanks to with online sites and distributors. So what are you waiting for? Publish your work this month!

Read modern-day poets.

Create a poetry blog or Instagram.

Creating a blog or Instagram page is a great way to share your own poems or highlight poetry that inspires you. Use a typewriter app to post photos of your writing or even take a screenshot of your notes and post it on Instagram or your personal blog. Find compelling, free photos and add your poetry alongside your photo to add depth to your page.

Write one poem per day.

Especially in these difficult times, writing about your day in poetry can help you process your feelings. If you typically journal, try expressing your usual journal topics as poems. Don’t worry about your poetry rhyming; just focus on free verse and see how many poems you can write!.

Watch slam poets on YouTube.

Slam poetry has made a revival, and now’s the perfect time to check it out! The Button Poetry YouTube channel has a variety of phenomenal slam poets to watch, so listen to their powerful words today!

It’s National Poetry Month, but thankfully, you don’t have to leave your home to celebrate! Find some new favorite poets, write your own poetry, or support a poet friend by purchasing their work this month – you won’t regret it!
