10 Beyond Crazy Breakup Stories That Will Shock You

It seems that an involuntary rite of passage we all go through is a bad breakup. We go through it, learn from it, heal, and set the standards we will accept moving forward. But obviously, going through it is an emotional mess.

Luckily, none of us is alone in this. A simple search online will show you some of the worst breakup stories imaginable. Below are some of the craziest ones we found.

Buzzfeed had these

  • “My ex flat out told me he wasn’t spending my birthday with me because we had been fighting a lot lately. Later, I found out that he hooked up with another chick that day, and he eventually left me for her.”
  • “We had been together about 10 years. My son had brain surgery to remove a brain tumor. Finally, my son was allowed to come home. The next morning, I realized he had a spinal fluid leak out of his nose. I ran to our bedroom to tell my BF and urge him to get dressed. We had to rush my son back to the hospital. He looked at me and said he had other things he wanted to do rather than accompany me to the ER. Talk about being ‘hit with a 2×4.’ When I got my son to the ER, and they confirmed the spinal fluid leak, I had to walk out. I cried and cried; balled my eyes out, in fact. I then sent my BF a very long text telling him to pack up his shit and get out of my house!”
  • “My ex and I had a song that we considered to be ‘our song.’ One night, I heard a rumor that he was feeling suicidal. I was scared out of my mind, so I started texting him the lyrics to our song and leaving him voicemails saying, ‘I love you.’ Two hours later, I got a text from him saying, ‘Why do you keep singing that stupid song? What is wrong with you?’ That’s all he said. It broke my heart. I should’ve dumped him then and there — that would’ve saved me from being heartbroken many more times.”

Insider Magazine found these:

  • “My ex and I went to Thailand together for a two-week birthday trip around the country (after being together over a year). On the third day, he confessed that he didn’t love me anymore and realized it a month before the trip but couldn’t tell me. He said he didn’t want to be with me anymore. The trip was non-refundable.”
  • “We’ve only been dating for about three months and only saw each other a couple [of] times a week as she lives an hour away, and our schedules clash. Anyway, I came down with what I thought was a bad cold, but I found myself unable to breathe, so I went to the ER and was admitted with a lung infection. She works long hours, so I waited until that evening to tell her. We talked all of five minutes before she went to bed, and then I didn’t hear anything from her the next day. Finally, she answered my text and proceeded to tell me this wasn’t going to work out and broke up with me.”

Refinery 29 had these doozies

  • “I broke up with him. He cried, wouldn’t leave, and proposed. Then would turn up at my place randomly for a year asking me to marry him.”
  • “One guy broke up with me after he’d been cheating on me for six months. He took me to a restaurant to try and ‘mend’ the relationship. I was hospitalized with food poisoning a day later. The day after that, I woke up at 6 a.m. — still in this hospital — to a text that said, ‘I just don’t want to be your boyfriend.’ He then called himself my best friend and phoned me at 6 p.m. that night to see how I was ‘coping’ with the breakup. Asshole.

Thought Catalog featured these cringe-worthy breakups:

  • “An ex-girlfriend of mine broke up with me over MSN Messenger. I was sitting in class, and she just IMed me that it was over and that we could still be friends. After that, she blocked me.”
  • “The words you use are too big.” His mom was an English teacher, and he was a college graduate. The reality was he just wasn’t in love with me anymore if he ever had been. I was pretty stunned at the time, though. Many years and many miles between then and now. It was a good thing in the end.”
  • “Girlfriend of 5 years wanted to move into a new house on the nicer side of town. We looked and looked and found a place nearly twice as expensive but in our price range. The day we got the keys, I went to work for the day, got off work, and all her stuff was gone. She said things just weren’t working out and moved back home with her parents (we were only 23/23). Also, she never sent me a penny for rent that year after the breakup. A fun year that was”.

I don’t know about you, but these stories made my skin crawl. Even if we don’t see things working out with someone romantically, we should give them enough respect to break up with them in the least painful way we can. That’s the least we can do.
