3 Ways To Make Your Home More Relaxing For Kids & Yourself


For many people, home is where the heart is. After all, there is a reason why it is a well-known saying. It is often a place we cannot wait to get back to after a long day at work, or even after participating in some exciting plans. The spot on our couch is calling, the snacks are where you expect them to be, and you can go to the toilet in peace – the dream.

However, homes can get a little crazy when we have busy lives, children, pets, and partners, and things can often feel a little chaotic which is not always welcome. Luckily, there are ways you can make your home more relaxing for a child.

1. Get Rid of Excess Clutter 

Clutter can make anyone feel stressed – even if they do not realize it. It has been suggested that clutter can have a significant impact on mental health, especially for women, and while a child might be less bothered about piles of toys everywhere (their own “mess”), having an untidy home and no space can make anyone feel stressed, claustrophobic, and cautious. 

Be sure to keep things in order as often as you can, to make sure your child has enough space to relax – and for yourself too. If you are not relaxed, there is a good chance your child might not be either.

2. Make Sure to Relax at Home Yourself 

There is nothing more distracting and stress-inducing than being in a home with someone else who is stressed. Humans can be empathetic, which means other people’s emotions can be absorbed into our feelings if we are around them. Children often do not have the option to leave a home if they are with parents or primary caregivers who are stressed, angry, or irritable, which is why you must make time for yourself to destress, so you do not impact others. This is especially the case as they often have little choice to remove themself completely from a situation. 3. Keep the Noise to a Minimum

Noise is a stressor for many, even if they are supposed to be pleasant or fun noises. If you have a child that is sensitive to noises, try to keep these to a minimum whenever you can. If you are looking after a child that might have special needs, be sure to accommodate wherever you can. It might be that they have had a traumatic experience with loud noises such as shouting, or perhaps they are sensitive to sounds in general. Taking this into consideration can make your child more relaxed to be home, and confident to come to you about any other needs they may have.
