3 Ways To Get Rid of Your Nasty ‘Alcohol Breath’ After a Night Out

The typical go-tos for getting rid of alcohol breath, like mints, gum, and mouthwash aren’t going to help much if your breath smells like you’re holding a distillery in your mouth. Here are three ways to get rid of bad alcohol breath:

How long does alcohol stay in your system?

If you’ve been drinking alcohol, it’s important to know that simply breathing in and out will not help sober you up. When you drink alcohol, your body continues to process it — even when you’re sleeping.

There is no definitive answer to how long it takes for alcohol to leave your system. The amount of time for alcohol detoxification will vary depending on several factors, including your age, weight, and gender. However, your body can generally process about one drink per hour. So if you have had six drinks, it could take up to six hours for you to eliminate the alcohol from your body. Heavy drinkers may take longer to detoxify.

Make an informed decision about whether or not to drink because your bad breath may ruin your chances of kissing your long-time crush or may even embarrass you in front of your boss.

1. Drink coffee to neutralize powerful smells.

Drinking coffee may not be a permanent solution, but if time is not on your side and getting rid of bad breath is your goal, it may help freshen your breath. Coffee has lots of antioxidants, which can freshen up your breath and make the alcohol scent less detectable to others.

The smell of coffee beans neutralizes almost any other smell. You’ll often find coffee shops next to perfume stores because they use coffee to cover up the potent scents of the perfumes and colognes. But why does coffee work so well?

Coffee’s aroma is a powerful neutralizer because it contains hundreds of different compounds — some of which bind to receptors in our noses that are also activated by other smells. It effectively cancels out these other scents. So next time you’re out for drinks, try drinking some coffee before heading home!

2. Chew gum.

You’ve been there — out with friends, enjoying drinks, and then faced with the unfortunate reality of having “alcohol breath.” While there are several ways to get rid of bad breath — from rinsing your mouth with water to sucking on a lemon — chewing gum is one of the easiest and most convenient solutions.

Start chewing the strongest chewing gum you can find. It won’t get rid of the alcohol smell permanently, but it’ll definitely help mask it until the gum’s flavor fades.

3. Use cough drops.

When you’ve had a few too many drinks and need to sober up quickly, reach for the cough drops. They may not help you get rid of the alcohol in your system, but they can mask the smell of your breath with the scent of peppermint or menthol. If alcohol makes your throat sore, they can also soothe it.

“Alcohol breath” stinks after a night out, but you don’t have to live with stinky breath. Next time you go out, try these tips to freshen up you breath the morning after!
