7 Makeup Mistakes That Make You Look Older Than You Are

We all want to age gracefully, and makeup can be a total lifesaver. On the other hand, the wrong products or application techniques can age you beyond your years. Your tried-and-true look from college may not always be ideal, and no one wants to look older because of a little beauty blunder! Here are some of the most common makeup mistakes that make you look older and how to correct them.

Mistake #1: Using The Wrong Foundation

The wrong foundation can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and dry skin which makes you look older. Finding the right foundation can be a game-changer for mature skin. If traditional foundation settles on your skin and looks cakey, try a light and hydrating BB or CC cream. These formulas are incredibly popular in Korean makeup because they look more natural and youthful on the skin. As an added bonus, many BB and CC creams include sunscreen and anti-aging ingredients, so you can apply fewer products and still look polished.

Mistake #2: Wearing The Wrong Blush Color

The right pop of color in the right place can bring out your cheekbones and give you a youthful glow.Choose your blush shade according to your skin tone. Fair skin loves a rosy pink or peach, but avoid brownish shades because they’ll clash and look dingy. Medium skin tones look great in peaches, pinks, mauves, and lighter bronzes. If you’ve got a darker complexion, try corals, berries, and deeper bronzes. Most mature women should avoid shades with too blue of an undertone because they make your skin look ashy and older. If you want to play it safe, warm peachy pinks flatter just about any skin tone.

Mistake #3: Overlining Your Lips

Lipliner is meant to keep your lipstick from bleeding into the fine lines around your mouth, which actually makes you look younger. Lipliner is a fantastic tool for softly defining the lips, but dark, heavy lipliner instantly makes you look older. For a more youthful look, choose a liner that matches your lipstick or the natural color of your lips. After lining your lips, blend the liner with your fingers and then apply a similarly colored lipstick on top.

Mistake #4: Applying Heavy Liner To Your Bottom Lashes

Applying severe liner on your bottom lashes might have made a statement back in high school, but now it’s time to reconsider your strategy. Heavy liner on the bottom lashes makes the eyes look smaller, older, and more tired. Soft, blended liner on the upper and lower lashes makes eyes look wider and brighter. Try applying a powder or pencil liner close to the lash line and then smudge it out to soften. Soft grey and bronzy toned liners will flatter every eye color and make them sparkle.

Mistake #5: Choosing The Wrong Eyeshadow

When it comes to choosing your lid color, going too bold or too bright can accentuate fine lines and look dated. Neutral shades like brown, maroon, plum, and gray are more flattering, more timeless, and they can really make your natural eye color pop. But that’s not to say you have to avoid bright colors altogether! Try applying a neutral shadow all over the lid and then using a bold, statement color to line your upper and lower lashes.

Mistake #6: Neglecting Those Brows

If you aren’t giving your eyebrows some love, you might be surprised at the difference a little definition makes. Brows are one of the most important features on your face because they frame the eyes and show expression. As we get older, our brows become paler and thinner, making your beautiful eyes less prominent. Try giving them some light shading with a pencil, gel, or powder that matches your natural hair color.

Mistake #7: Over-Contouring

Contouring is very popular these days and when done right, can make you look younger. But it can also go wrong in so many ways. Contouring is meant to enhance and define the shape of your face, but if you overdo it, it can accentuate fine lines and other things that are better off concealed. The best way to keep it youthful is apply with a light hand and blend, blend, blend.

The best way to keep your youthful glow is to update your look regularly. Don’t get stuck in a makeup rut! Experiment with new products and new techniques to find what’s most flattering for you as you age. The way you’ve always done it might not be the way to keep doing it.
