7 Black-Owned Beauty Brands You Should Support

black-owned Beauty Brands

In support of the Black Lives Matter movement, I’ve compiled a list of black-owned cosmetics brands founded by women of African descent; who show their heritage pride by designing colorful makeup. On this list, you’ll also find drugstore makeup brands for women of color.

Juvia’s Place

Chichi Eburu founded this brand in 2015. Juvia’s Place is a brand inspired by African queens. Moreover, Juvia’s Place eyeshadow palettes are highly pigmented with a very soft formula, and it’s one of my go-to eyeshadow brands. I have tried her blushes which blend well on my skin tone. All in all, my favorite products from this company are the Warrior I, The Nubian, and The Masquerade palettes.

Coloured Raine

Coloured Raine is a brand founded by Loraine R. Dowdy, a native from Brooklyn, N.Y. Her brand motto is self-expression and using makeup as a tool for such. Coloured Raine also offers highly pigmented makeup recognizing the beauty of colored women. What’s more, CR encourages anyone of any age, gender, race, or color to believe in themselves. Amongst Coloured Raine products my favorites are the Queen of Hearts palette and the Power palette.

OPV Beauty London

OPV is a British-based makeup brand from sisters Opeyemi and Buloka Adeyemo. It is a family-owned makeup brand that was designed with the idea of being all-skin-tone inclusive. OPV is a full professional beauty brand. In fact, it offers hair products, makeup tools, stations, wigs, hair extensions, and hair care products. Finally, its website allows payment with American dollars and offers international shipping to the U.S.

Black Opal

Black Opal is an American makeup brand for women of color. It was the first drugstore brand to incorporate skincare to manage hyperpigmentation of dark-skinned women. I have tried the Black Opal Even True perfecting skin cleanser which has diminished the appearance of dark spots. The company also has a beautiful line of lipsticks. My favorite shades are Fantasia Plum, Wine not, and Berry Wicked. Black Opal cosmetics are very affordable as each product is under 10 dollars each. You can find it at Rite Aid and Walgreens.

Black Radiance

Black Radiance is another drugstore brand. The company offers a variety of sheer and highly pigmented lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushes, mascaras, and setting powders all under 8 dollars. Black Radiance is one of my go-to makeup brands at the drugstore due to its low prices and color selection. Moreover, their mascaras are hypoallergenic and do not irritate my sensitive eyes. Additionally, the Perfect Tone lipstick in Plum Passion has been a favorite shade since high school.

Iman Cosmetics

Iman was founded by internationally-known fashion model Iman Abdulmajil. Iman created her makeup line because she saw there was a lack of cosmetics on the market for women of color. Similar to Black Opal, the company offers skin care products along with various types of foundations, BB creams, and CC creams that satisfy the wearer’s choice of coverage. You can find it online and at Walgreens stores.

Vera Moore Cosmetics

This is another brand created by a celebrity. Vera Moore is an African-American actress and entrepreneur. Her line offers all types of cosmetics, including skincare for men. You can find her brand at the Look Boutique inside of Duane Read/Walgreens. It is a mid-range brand that provides high-quality skincare for its price.

In addition to protesting or contacting your representatives, supporting black-owned companies is another way to support the BLM movement. Plus, these brands offer amazing products!
