6 Steps To Living Your Best Life After College Graduation

Congratulations! You’re just a few short months away from college graduation, and you have a whole world of exciting opportunities ahead of you. Even though college graduation is something to celebrate, as the big day approaches you might begin to dread entering the “real world.” After all, you’ve been a student for as long as you can remember, so no longer having a set structure can be a bit of a shock. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to prepare yourself for life after graduation.

1. Figure out your next steps.

You most likely have a goal or dream that you’ve been working toward. Now is the time to reach for that goal and try to achieve it! If your post-college plans include grad school, start researching schools and submitting applications now. If you want to jump straight into the workforce, send in applications and start interviewing as soon as possible. And if you want to take a gap year to relax or travel after your years of strenuous study, that’s cool, too! No matter what your plans are as a college graduate, now is the time to lay the groundwork for your future.

2. Choose where you want to live post-graduation.

Graduating college means that you can no longer call a dorm room your home. Whether you’re planning to move back home with your parents to save rent money, or you’d rather live in a flat with some friends, it’s important to think about the logistics of your future living space now. Give yourself ample time to plan and research housing options, especially if you’re planning to move somewhere brand new or need to find roommates.

3. Spice up your social media.

Think carefully about the social media image you want to present in the professional world. If you have photos on your social media that you wouldn’t want to show your grandmother, consider deleting them or making your entire account private. Employers and some universities may use your social media to evaluate you as a potential employee or as a grad school candidate.

Also, now is a great time to create a LinkedIn account. LinkedIn is a great medium to start building your professional network, connect with recruiters, and create an online portfolio to share with future employers.

4. Practice self-care.

As graduation day approaches, it’s completely normal to have mixed feelings about the future. Some days can’t go by fast enough, while others seem long and sad. But understand that the highs and lows you feel are normal, and do everything possible to take care of yourself during this time. Seek therapy, have a heart-to-heart with your best friend, or engage in your favorite hobby. Take time to mentally unwind – you need it!

5. Make the most of your last semester.

When you say goodbye to your college campus, don’t leave with any regrets. If there are any clubs you’ve always wanted to join, go to a meeting now! If your friends are planning a big spring break trip, join in on the fun. And if there’s a class you’ve always wanted to take, this is your last chance, so register today. Live the last few months of your college experience to the fullest!

6. Celebrate your accomplishments.

Earning a college degree is a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud of yourself! Send out graduation announcements to your friends and family. Plan a dinner or party on the day of the ceremony. Go on a dream trip with your best friends after you graduate – you deserve it! Don’t let your college graduation pass without a celebration!

Leaving college is a big change, so it’s normal to feel both nervous and excited about your graduation. College graduation closes one chapter of your life, but it also opens a brand new life full of freedom and exciting opportunities. You have the power to make what comes next amazing, so make these last few months the best they can be!
