5 Ways To Add Reading To Your Daily Routine In Honor Of World Book Day

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve had a passion for reading. To me, there is nothing more magical than escaping to an alternate universe full of excitement and wonder and immersing myself into the story. Reading is a great way to unwind after a long day, take a break from your newsfeed, and get lost in someone else’s world.

Luckily, for all book-lovers, March 2nd is World Book Day! World Book Day exists to celebrate books and authors as well to influence young readers to keep reading.

In honor of World Book Day, here are five tips to help you make reading part of your everyday life:

1. Make reading a part of your daily routine.

We all have morning and nightly routines. Some of us never miss a morning jog. Others of us use an in-depth nighttime skin routine before we go to bed. But why not add reading into our long lists of daily rituals? Squeeze a few pages in as you sip your morning coffee, or opt for 20 minutes of reading before bed instead of checking social media. Reading regularly will become a habit in no time.

2. Always keep a book in your purse, backpack, or car.

We’ve all been there: on hold on a call, waiting for our appointment, or sitting through a long ride. We all have moments of unexpected downtime during our day. During those moments of downtime, give your eyes a “screen break,” and pull out a book instead! Even if you only have a few minutes and read just a couple of pages, reading can still bring you a mini escape from your day.

3. Create your own reading list.

It can be hard to get back into the habit of reading, especially if you have no idea where to start. A great way to motivate yourself to read is to create your own reading list! Add to your list whenever you find books that interest you. That way, when you finish a book you’ll have another suggestion ready and waiting! Check out sites like Amazon or Goodreads for ideas as well as reviews from other readers.

4. Get an e-reader or library card.

Some people don’t enjoy reading because they don’t care for physical books. But don’t let your book format preferences discourage you! There are so many different e-reader choices, and they make reading a breeze. E-readers can also keep thousands of books right at your fingertips.

5. Read books you’ll actually enjoy.

Some books aren’t for everyone, and that’s totally OK. If you can’t wrap your head around a book’s style, dislike the characters, or just can’t get into the story, don’t force yourself to keep reading. Forcing yourself to finish books you hate will make reading absolute torture. With that said, I always suggest reading at least the first couple of chapters of a book at least the first couple of chapters before you make a final decision about it. As Marie Kondo says, if it doesn’t spark joy, let it go.

Reading is a great way to relax and unwind, so it should never feel like a chore. This World Book Day, keep these reading tips in mind, and don’t forget to curl up with a good book!
