5 Ways To Build Up Your Self-Esteem After You’ve Lost Your Confidence

self-esteem

Self-esteem is unpredictable. Life circumstances can easily cause it to rise or fall. Divorce, dismissal from work, or even an offhand remark can negatively influence our self-esteem. If you’ve lost your self-confidence and hope to build it back up, here are five ways to boost your self-esteem.

1. Get rid of unnecessary clutter.

You can’t become self-confident in an old, depressing environment. So be sure to “take out the trash” as soon as possible. Think about your clothes, shoes, furniture, and even the people who surround you. If you notice something (or someone) you don’t like, throw it out of your life without regret. When you toss out unnecessary clutter, you clear space for more pleasant aspects of your life. You can now buy a confidence-boosting pair of shoes because you have room for them. Likewise, you can meet more interesting people because you now have time for them.

2. Find an interesting hobby.

If you’ve always wanted to try diving or hiking but you don’t know if you can handle it, it’s high time to change your mind. Finding a fulfilling way to spend your time will make you happier in the long run. Moreover, many different hobbies (like embroidery or carpentry) can also be a source of income. If you don’t know how to discover a new hobby, you can ask your friends about what they do for fun. Maybe they’ll help you find something that interests you!

3. Change your appearance.

Your appearance can strongly influence your self-perception. If you don’t like the person you see in the mirror every day, you can’t boost your self-esteem. Try making minor changes to your appearance, like finally making yourself go to scissor tech and getting a new haircut or testing out a new lipstick shade. If you’re looking for a more dramatic transformation, you might prefer hitting the gym or trying rhinoplasty or plastic surgery. But no matter what changes you make, make sure that you’re changing for your own happiness, not for others’ approval.

4. Stay active.

When you have low self-esteem, the worst thing you can do is become a couch potato. If you aren’t fond of extreme activities, like playing rough sports or attending loud music festivals, there are still plenty of options for you. Travel to a nearby city and spend all day walking around and sightseeing there. You could also go to the mountains with friends. Just imagine a cozy evening near the bonfire under a starry sky. Getting out of the house will cheer you up, which in turn will result in higher self-esteem.

5. Help people or animals.

Another way to boost your self-esteem is to help people or animals. You can donate your blood to save someone’s life. Even if you aren’t eligible, though, you can still help people in need. You can donate new or slightly-used clothes and shoes to those in need or donate food to a food bank. Moreover, many animal shelters have an abundance of cats and dogs that need your love and care. Buy some food for the shelter and spend time playing with the animals. Maybe you’ll even fall in love with one and feel your self-esteem rise as a new pet owner.

If you feel like your self-esteem is at a low, there are plenty of ways to raise it back up.  Whether you choose to become active in your community or clean out what no longer serves you, you’re sure to find the perfect way to feel good about yourself.
