Ending a relationship can be extremely difficult, especially if the breakup wasn’t part of your plan to begin with. Maybe everything was going well, but you suddenly hit some bumps in the road. Perhaps circumstances outside of your control forced you to make a heartbreaking choice. Maybe for whatever reason, you just can no longer be with your partner. Although it may kill you inside to say goodbye to the person you love, parting ways with them is so much better than keeping your partner in a birdcage, unable to fly free.
Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t create happiness.
A year ago, my long-distance relationship hit a bump. No matter how I tried to repair the mess, it was obvious that the damage had already been done. I eventually came to the conclusion that although I loved this man, I couldn’t keep putting him through all of the struggles we were experiencing.
So I decided that it was best for us to go our separate ways. In the beginning, it was hard to come to terms with the decision to leave, but I knew that walking away was best for us both. At the end of the day, I want us both to be happy and healthy, but I knew that we could never be happy and healthy together.
People have asked me, “If you love him so much, why did you end your relationship?” The truth is, love is about being mature enough to understand that sometimes, even love itself isn’t enough to make your relationship work.
Sometimes you need to put your partner first, even if that means letting them go.
Ending a relationship isn’t always selfish or cruel. Sometimes it’s difficult and comes from a place of love and understanding. If you aren’t happy in a relationship, it’s up to your partner to recognize your misery and find a way to improve the situation, even if it means that you both walk away. Sometimes the magic of your relationship is just gone, and that’s OK. In the end, you’ll move on and find someone who makes you happy, and so will your significant other. Sometimes letting go of the person you love actually proves that you love them more.
