National Proposal Day: 4 Things You Should Know About Getting Engaged

national proposal day

National Proposal Day actually happens twice a year, according to Kay Jewelers. September 23rd and March 20th both mark the day to celebrate popping the question. These days are also the equinox,  “when there is an equal amount of day and night – a beautiful representation of two equals joining together,” according to Kay.  So, if you think you’ve found the one, consider using today — or March 20th, if you’re not quite ready yet — to pop the big question. Here are 4 things to remember about your future proposal:

Don’t worry if it’s not perfect!

Not all proposals will be picture perfect. However, don’t be scared to involve your friends or family. It’s become almost expected to have a friend or photographer take a picture as the love of your life gets down on one knee and holds out a beautiful, shiny ring. Although my wonderful beloved did think of this, his friend failed to get a good angle, and none of the pictures worked. But I wouldn’t change a thing! We had just gotten off a plane and went hiking at Red Rock Canyon just outside of Las Vegas. Still, even if it wasn’t “picture perfect,” it was perfect for me.

So don’t worry if your proposal doesn’t line up with what you see on Instagram. Mine didn’t go as planned, but I still wouldn’t have it any other way. All that matters is that it’s the right person at the right time!

Savor every moment as it’s happening.

For me, the best parts of it were the surprise and the speech beforehand. Ok, actually, the best part was all of it, and I can’t pinpoint the exact best moment. Every element of it filled me with joy, and replaying it in my head brings me back to that feeling. So as you’re experiencing it, don’t rush to the yes (even if you just can’t wait to be engaged!). Look around, take it all in, and remember every piece of it that you can.

Figure out how to spread the news afterward.

Engagement can be a special, private moment. Or it can be a shout-it-from-the-rooftops kind of experience. I have a big family, and I waited until a family gathering to make it public. It was very important to me that they knew before posting the news on social media, but after that, we were ready to tell the whole world!

For you, the way you tell the masses might go a little differently. If you have family and friends far away, you might need to post in on social media right away or give your closest loved ones a call. There are no rules for how to do it — it’s your big moment, and you can shout it from the rooftops or keep it all to yourself!

Maybe you’re not ready to get engaged — and that’s okay too!

Even if your proposal doesn’t happen today, it will happen some day, maybe even March 20th! Maybe you’re seeing someone but need a little more time before this big step, or maybe you’re single and just focusing on you right now! Either way, don’t rush to a proposal just to get that snazzy ring. Wait for the right time, and it’ll be immeasurably amazing.

There is no wrong way to declare your undying love for a person, but what better day than National Proposal Day to make your intentions known?! Whatever happens today, I hope you feel the romantic spirit. If there is a question that you should say “yes” to, let your heart answer first, then your head. Your heart is the one to trust with a decision like this.

  1. Proposals are so romantic! I just helped my brother propose in a rustic barn that we decked out with flowers and it was so special! Thanks for the great post. One day I’ll be on the receiving end of a proposal!
