5 Instances When Splurging Is Actually A Good Idea

Unplanned purchases may often leave you feeling guilty, especially when the term “splurge” carries a negative connotation. However, sometimes you should spend just a bit more on that dress or that dinner. Quite frankly, you deserve it! Sure, living in debt just because you take the “Treat yourself” motto too literally is not healthy, but there are moments when you shouldn’t think twice before you buy a pair of shoes, go to a nice restaurant, or take a well-deserved vacation. Here are five times when splurging can actually be a good idea:

1. When you thought about the purchase beforehand.

It’s one thing to go out to buy milk and eggs and come back with 5 bags of groceries instead. However, it’s totally different when you finally decide to spend a bit more on that blouse you’ve been eyeing for a while.

Remember that splurging on something you truly desire is different than impulse shopping. Instead of running to the register the moment that you see an item that you like, try it on first, see how you feel, go home, and see if you’re still thinking about it days later. If not, then it was just a spur-of-the-moment desire. If you dream about that coveted item all night, though, then check your budget and hit the store tomorrow. Your purchase can be guilt-free because you truly wanted it and planned it out.

2. When you spend on experiences.

Sometimes, you end up buying things that end up sitting in your closet or collecting dust on your counter. Experiences, on the other hand, don’t clutter your home and last a lifetime.

When you’re splurging money on a vacation, you actually end up investing in yourself. You get to meet new people and experience entirely different cultures. Maybe you’ll dine at Michelin star restaurants in Toronto or enjoy a walking tour in Tasmania. Either way, spending your hard-earned money on experiences is always a worthwhile investment.

3. When you practice self-care.

Investing in your well-being should be at the top of your priority list. Whether you spend your money on a hobby or a weekend at the spa, you shouldn’t regret doing something that boosts your mood and increases your confidence.

One of the best ways to invest in yourself is to take care of your mental health. When you are going through a rough time, a weekend away or a day at the spa can be just what you need to get yourself back on track. After all, at the end of the day, we all need self-care.

4. When you want to network.

Going to social events may seem frivolous, but it’s often a great opportunity to meet people who share your interests. Who knows? Maybe you’ll meet the love of your life or land your dream job

Don’t feel guilty splurging on a fun party or fascinating conference from time to time. Put on a nice outfit, enjoy the event, and socialize. At the end of the night, you’ll feel more satisfied than if you had stayed on the couch the whole evening.

5. When it aligns with your values.

Sure, that extra slice of cake doesn’t add high value to your life, but in the grand scheme of things, splurges should help enhance your life just a little. Most of the time, your resources are limited and you need them to cover all your necessities, but when you do splurge, make sure that you spend on something that makes your life better, even if just in a small way.

Money doesn’t bring happiness, but when you use it wisely, it can enhance your life. Think of what makes you happy and invest in it, even if your purchase may seem unnecessary to others. You like to take long baths to relax and pull yourself together after a long day? Then turning your bathroom into an at-home spa is just what you need, and nobody should tell you otherwise.
