Is Our Society Oversensitive These Days?

society

Are we over sensitive as a society these days? I think yes and no. Let me explain.

Our society is overly-sensitive about certain things. Lately, lots of controversy surrounds reboots of old movies and TV shows. For example, the internet recently exploded when Disney shared news of a Little Mermaid reboot with Halle Bailey cast in the lead role of Ariel. People instantly acted outraged that Disney would cast an African American woman for the leading role. They’re all upset about it, yet they keep forgetting that this cartoon mermaid is just that: a cartoon.

Some people say that the original versions of films and television shows hold nostalgic memories, and reboots ruin that. However, the original still exists, so we should view these remakes as a way to share the joy of our childhood with a new generation and just enjoy the modernized spin. Is there really anything wrong with that? It’s pointless to waste our time and energy feeling so offended by something like a remake of a classic movie.

On the other hand, we’re not sensitive enough when it comes to important issues. When it comes to climate change, detention centers, and humanitarian crises, suddenly nobody cares. Currently in our own country’s border detention centers, kids are trapped in the most horrific conditions, separated from their parents for months on end, and fall ill (or even die) due to the lack of medical care provided.

People are quick to point fingers on social media and blame others for everything that’s wrong. Yet by blaming someone else, we avoid taking responsibility ourselves. Everyone’s quick to judge, but no one wants to spring into action and actually do something about these serious issues. Finding solutions for these complex problems obviously won’t be quick and easy, but it is crucial to humanity’s survival. Nothing will change if we all take a back seat and wait for things to unfold.

Here’s an idea: Instead of worrying about who will play the next Ariel, why don’t we consider real remakes for our planet? If we cared about the environment and each other as much as we care about movies and television, the world would be a much better place right now.

Talk to your local politicians. Share the changes you want to see. Volunteer for causes that matter to you. Figure out what’s more important to you and what you can do right now to impact change. Let’s stop fighting over silly stuff and calling each other names on the internet and constructively use our time.
