If there’s one thing the general public loves, it’s a good old fashioned celebrity feud. And while things in the tabloids and on social media pages have been quiet for quite some time now, leave it to the YouTube Beauty Influencer community to start it back up again.
On Friday May 10th, YouTuber Tati Westbrook posted a 43 minute long video exposing her former friend and YouTuber James Charles for his shady behavior towards his friends and how he was sexually luring and manipulating straight men. It was titled “BYE SISTER” since that’s what he calls his fans. Needless to say, this fight got messy!
Since then the Twitterverse has lost it and a lot of other claims have been made by other YouTubers and fans alike. It’s almost hard to understand what the heck is even going on anymore. Luckily, we’ve been keeping on track.
Tati and James had a close friendship before Charles launched his career. She was a mentor to him until his fame overshadowed hers on YouTube. He’s known for being one of the first teenage boys doing makeup tutorials on the platform, and paved the way for others such as Jeffree Star, Patrick Starr and Manny MUA. He was also CoverGirl’s first male ambassador in 2016. Yeah, now you remember him, don’t you?
April 22, 2019
Charles endorsed Sugar Bear Hair vitamins on social media, as made famous by Kylie Jenner. However, they are the number one competitor against Westbrooks product line Halo Beauty, a beauty-supplement company. Obviously, she took great offence and felt betrayed that one of her best friends would endorse her competitor yet not her own brand. So she posted to her Instagram story to talk about the endorsement, thus prompting him to apologize on his IG story on April 23rd.

Six days after the drama unfolded, the beauty community took advantage and commented on the issue. MUA Gabriel Zamora made one video that struck a nerve with Westbrook and calling her out for being fake and trying to throw Charles’ name under the bus to further her own career. Westbrook would later address that in her own video, saying her friendship with Charles “was not transactional.”
“BYE SISTER” – May 10, 2019
May 10th marked the day Westbrook posted her video to expose Charles for who he “truly is.” She began by establishing their relationship and how close they were they he even did her makeup on her wedding day, and how her husband helped him get a “boutique manager” among other favours to help his career because she believed and trusted him. She basically said he has been lying about the reasons behind sponsored posts on Instagram.
Then the accusations came.
Around the twenty minute mark she commented on his bad behavior, which she said “is over[ly] sexualized” for his audience “of 12- and 14-year-olds, dominantly.” She then accused him of trying to seduce straight men and harassing them because he believed their “sexuality” doesn’t matter because he is “a celebrity.” And she came equipped with several stories and facts to support her claims. She followed the video by posting this cryptic tweet:
Seven hours after Tati posted her video discussing her pain, James decided to film his own eight minute long apology video. Fans accused the video of being fabricated, untruthful and fake. Additionally, he still avoided taking responsibility for hurting her feelings over the whole Sugar Bear scandal. So literally nobody fell for his crocodile tears.
By The Numbers – May 12, 2019
James Charles had lost 2 million subscribers within the two days. He had nearly 16 million, and that number dropped to 14 million by Sunday afternoon. Westbrook’s subscribers, conversely, have been exploding: She hit 8 million on Sunday from being at just over 5 million on Friday.
Enter Jeffree Starr
And of course, Jeffree Starr (a fellow YouTuber) loves getting involved in drama that doesn’t involve him, so he decided to comment on the situation in a few since deleted tweets. He not only commented on how his own boyfriend felt about Charles, but confirming Tati’s statements as being true.
Unimpressed by Jeffree getting into this business, James’ 17 year old brother Ian added his two cents, sub-tweeting 33 year old Star with, “Why does everyone act so tough on the internet,” which Jeffree Star quote-tweeted (and once again, deleted): “Why is your brother a predator? Why’d you really have to move back up to NYC? Exactly. Shut the fuck up.”

Just after midnight Westbrook announced her decision to old off on posting a response video to Charles apology video.
Meanwhile, Charles has lost over 3 million followers and subscribers from his various social media accounts. Famous celebrity endorsers have also unfollowed him and removed any social interactions with him, obviously taking her side.
So far this is all that has happened aside from a lot of comments in the news and on Twitter about the allegations and controversy.
We will continue to update this story as more news unfolds. Until then, stay tuned because new developments might be subtly starting and we haven’t even realized it yet.
