Not only does the first Monday of May indicate that we can officially wear our new spring clothes to match the beautiful weather, but it’s also the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala tonight. Dubbed as the Super Bowl of Fashion, all of the A-List stars have dawned the red carpet to showcase their most creative outfits.
This year’s MET Gala theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The exhibit is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” So no, this isn’t about the great outdoors, it’s literally about outrageous fashion.
The hosts/creative directors for this years MET Gala include Anna Wintour, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams. And let me tell you, they inspired every single guest to dress for the occasion; absolutely outrageous.
Let’s break down the best, worst, and most jaw dropping (in a good or bad way) outfits of the night so you can get the full lowdown.
Mother Monster officially won the competition solely because she wore not only one outfit for the red carpet, but four! They all varied in wowing moments and even more elaborate and over the top poses in true Gaga fashion.
Now this is the fashion risk we need to be seeing more of from men on the MET carpets. This is why he was selected as one of the creative directors. Although it’s odd, he nailed the theme to perfection.
Honey hung her tennis shoes up and exchanged it for one of the most elegant and feminine gowns I’ve ever seen! Who said an athlete can’t sweep the competition in the fashion game too?
And this right here shows you why she’s a fashion icon. She’s classy, elegant, on theme and is so damn timeless. Thank you for gracing us with your presence and influence, Queen.
Most Outrageous/Most On Theme
Arguably she is a bright light on the MET Gala red carpet and this year she literally shined looking like a chandelier. And I freaking love it.
Queen Celine had fun with this look and you can tell she’s having the time of her life! I am so proud of her for stepping out, having a moment and absorbing the attention she deserves.
Much like last year, Jared slayed the theme so hard he even brought his head as an accessory. Legendary!
Can we please take in that:
a) Her dress lights up
b) She looks like Cinderella
c) She even lost her shoe on the pink carpet
d) Her fairy Godmother was actually her stylist who has been styling her since she was 14 years old and created this outfit.
I AM LIVING BUT DEAD AT THE SAME TIME!
Kendall and Kylie Jenner
I love their coordinating outfits, I think they look fresh and really made the effort to nail the theme. I am obsessed and I want to see more!
Of course, she had to pay omage to her signature suit style, but everything about this outfit has me saying “YAS!” This fits the theme perfectly and showcases that she’s a trailblazer in the fashion industry.
She knows how to show up dressed for the occasion and I’m thrilled that she keeps this energy up every year.
Diana Ross is that you? Because damn! Ciara looks iconic!
While she looks like the comfiest blanket to sleep on in the world, she was exactly the right amount of dramatic we need for this event. And I am here for it!
When we hear about CAMP Fashion, we want the big, bold and beautiful. This outfit describes the theme perfectly from the sequins to the headpiece and the feathers.
WHY CAN’T ALL MEN MEET THE THEME AND ACTUALLY TAKE RISKS ON THE PINK CARPET!?
What The Actual F*ck Are They Wearing?
Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart
While they are totally on trend with the outrageous trends, and I mean outrageous, I actually think they look God awful.
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas
I love this couple and I feel like they always keep on theme, which they still did. I just can’t believe this. They don’t coordinate, Nick’s highlighter is prettier than Priyanka’s entire face and I just can’t.
Kim Kardashian West
I just have to say “ew.” That’s all.
You know, I get she’s one of the biggest Super Models in the world. But girlfriend, this outfit takes away from your beauty and makes you look like a Medieval Squire. WTF?
I actually didn’t know who this was. Kris, you are not doing amazing sweetie.
Best Pixie Looks
She can kidnap me and take me to her forest any day now. I’m waiting!
I actually love this look on her and how she embraced the creativity for her first MET Gala. She looked fresh and unique, and I love her decision!
Missed The Theme But Still Looked AMAZING
This is not the type of event he’s known to go to but let me tell you, he brought the fashion and killed it! He’s just so cute and you can see he’s having so much fun!
I am living for this look even though it wasn’t elaborate enough for me to think it was on theme.
This Victoria’s Secret model looked like a Swarofski Crystal, but sadly she just wasn’t elaborate enough for me to think she met the MET theme.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen
Literally everything they wear is outrageous except for these outfits. But I just had to post a picture of what they look like these days since this is the one day of the year we see them in public.
I just was not woo’d by this look but I still thought she was very elegant looking.
Aside from some of the not so flattering outfits and lackluster theme busters, noticeably missing from the iconic stairs are MET favorite Blake Lively. Blake just recently announced her third pregnancy with husband Ryan Reynolds, so we think she may not have been feeling up to it.
Regardless, the coverage from the pink carpet in New York was certainly not disappointing and the fashion was truly something you’d never see anywhere else. This theme was meant to provoke creativity and promote unique pieces we’ll never recreate again. These celebs rocked their most campy looks, and I can’t wait to hear what next years theme is.
In the mean time, I’ll be here pretending to be Joan Rivers and be my own fashion police from the comfort of my bed while in pj’s.
