90s Throwbacks: 5 TV Shows That Still Make Us Smile

If there’s one thing that Millennials live for, it’s nostalgia. From bringing back former fashion trends to the music we play on Spotify, we clearly love to soak up the good old days. As you can guess, television is no different.

Luckily for us, 90s TV was full of positivity, wholesome values, and living the American dream. Many of us learned more about life from watching our favorite evening shows than we did from our families. But how many of those shows do we miss now?

Well, here’s 5 feel-good television favorites that you’ll want to binge watch after these brief refreshers.

1. “Boy Meets World”

“Boy Meets World” follows the hilarious and ever-growing Cory Matthews as he experiences life from middle school through college. With the help of his bad boy best friend, super smart girlfriend, and wise teacher, Cory learns everything from US History to french kissing. “Boy Meets World” lasted a total of 7 seasons from 1993-2000.

With this show not only did we laugh, but we also cried, learned, and shouted “Feeny!” with nearly every episode. “Boy Meets World” showed us that life isn’t easy, but as long as we stay true to ourselves and aren’t afraid to lean into our friends, we can make it through almost anything. The show also taught us that even the most difficult of times help us grow and rise above.

You can stream “Boy Meets World” on Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube.

2. “Clarissa Explains It All”

Melissa Joan Hart won over our hearts and our TV screens as the sarcastic yet hilarious Clarissa Darling from 1991 until 1994 on Nickelodeon. Our main character and her friends tackled coming-of-age issues with honesty and humor, helping us feel less alone.

“Clarissa Explains It All” taught us to always stand up for what we believe in, be true to ourselves, and remember to embrace our inner child from time to time. Oh, and our parents can be cool… sometimes.

You can still watch the 90s Melissa Joan Hart and rock out to the theme song (alright, alright) with Amazon or Vudu.

3. “Family Matters”

Police officer Carl Winslow sure has his hands full, and I don’t just mean on the job! From 1989 until 1998, “Family Matters” dominated ABC’s evening lineup. It followed our beloved cop as he balanced work, family, and his quirky neighbor, Steve Urkle.

Each episode in this nine-season series explores life lessons and provides us with the hope that there’s still positive, honest, and helpful people in this world. We see the benefits of persistence, unconditional love, and humor. “Family Matters” is one of the most wholesome shows to ever make a splash on primetime television.

Thanks to Hulu, YouTube, and Google Play, you can still watch “Family Matters” today!

4. “Home Improvement”

Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor and his family captivated us weekly from 1991-1999.

Home Improvement starred Tim Allen and focused on that iconic image of the American family. The show followed Tim Taylor, who split his time between being a TV show host and a family man. Home Improvement taught us the importance of work-life balance, friendship, and neighborly wisdom. Though I don’t envy Tim’s wife raising three crazy boys, I did love watching the show and seeing how happy families can be with a little bit of love and understanding.

Home Improvement is available through Hulu, Amazon, YouTube, Google, and Vudu.

5. “The Nanny”

The theme song says it all about The Nanny named Fran: unsuspecting cosmetics saleswoman Fran Fine instantly becomes a nanny for a wealthy widower’s three children. It filled us with brutal honesty, bundles of laughs, and New York life.

The Nanny contained its fair share of life lessons, too. We learned that money isn’t everything. Fran didn’t come from money, but that doesn’t make her any less intelligent or insightful than the rest of the characters. We also learn the importance of keeping things fun, enjoying your work, and that anything really is possible.

Although The Nanny isn’t as easy to (legally) stream as other 90s sitcoms, leading lady Fran Drescher hinted at a possible reboot in the not too distant future.

So, call to order a pizza (or order online… this isn’t the 90s, after all), curl up with your Beanie Babies, and relive the glory days of television with these childhood favorites! The life lessons are an excellent and fully applicable bonus that our modern country desperately needs.
