If you’re anything like me, you may have gotten used to seeing under eye bags. But you don’t need to accept them as a permanent feature. In fact, contrary to popular belief, eye bags are not simply caused by a lack of sleep; your genetics and daily habits affect them too.
There are lots of home remedies you can try to reduce or eliminate the appearance of eye bags. These range from eye treatments to changing your daily habits.
Here they are!
Use Black or Green Tea Bags
Applying caffeinated tea bags under your eyes is a tried and true method! Application can help to reduce the appearance of dark circles and eye bags. The caffeine has an anti-inflammatory effect which works to tighten and soothe the skin.
To use this method, start by boiling water and steeping the tea bags for up to five minutes. Remove the tea bags and let them chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. Once they cool, leave them under your eyes for 15 to 30 minutes.
Use a Neti Pot to Clear Your Sinuses
Clearing out your sinuses may make a big difference in reducing eye bags. A Neti Pot irrigates your sinuses by pouring saline through the nasal canal, washing away mucus and other debris.
For this method, first, fill a Neti Pot with saltwater. Then, position the spout in your higher nostril and pour the solution slowly into your nostril. The solution will drain out the lower nostril. Repeat the process with the other nostril.
Drink More Water
Dehydration makes your under-eye bags larger and more obvious. To combat this, drink water throughout the day. Recommended amounts are 9 cups of fluid each day for women and 13 for men.
Tip: I like to carry a cute reusable water bottle with me at all times to remind myself to drink more water.
Apply Sunscreen Every Day
You probably already know how important it is to protect your skin with sunscreen daily. Did you know that sunscreen helps your skin in many ways besides cancer prevention, though? It helps with discoloration and premature aging, too. Furthermore, sunscreen will help with your under eye bags.
Choose a sunscreen lotion or stick with an SPF of 30 or higher to make sure your skin is adequately protected. You could also use a 30 SPF moisturizer or foundation if that works better for your routine.
Wash Your Face with Cold Water
Water doesn’t just help your under eye bags when you drink it; it can also make a difference when you use it to wash your face. The coldness constricts the blood vessels and makes the skin look less swollen.
Wash your face with cold water in the morning to give your skin a bright, lively look. If your eye bags are particularly pesky one day, soak a washcloth in cold water and wring it out before leaving it over your eyes for a few minutes. This should be very effective at reducing the eye bags.
Reduce Your Salt Intake
Eating lots of salt causes your body to retain fluids, meaning the skin under your eyes (and everywhere else) will look puffier. Avoid processed foods which may have surprisingly high sodium contents. This only makes your eyes look worse!
Try to eat more whole foods, like fruits and vegetables, which have relatively low sodium contents. You don’t have to give up all your salty snacks, but the American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day.
