Why The Holidays Shouldn’t Be The Only Time You’re Spending With Your Family

The holiday season is here, and during these next few weeks, most people have a few family get-togethers. But, we need to make an effort to spend time with our family throughout the entire year, not just in December. It’s important to make time for your family.

My dad has always taught me that family is forever and family is the only thing you have that will always stick by your side. He is absolutely right! Throughout my life, there have been several times due to my physical limitations where I had to go into surgery and go to many different doctors to receive the answers I needed.

My family has stuck by my side through my challenges and obstacles. I couldn’t ask for a better family! They have never treated me any different from other humans despite how society may perceive me.

It’s important to make the effort to spend time with family because for one thing you never know when it could be the last time you will see them. Life throws us good and bad surprises. For example, as a child, I strongly disliked visiting my great-grandparents that lived in the countryside of Florida because they didn’t have cable so I couldn’t watch Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel. So every time we would plan a visit to see them I wasn’t excited about going there. When I was at there house, I would leave to go explore. I would sometimes play dominoes with my great-grandfather and grandmother but after a while that got boring. I wish I could go back in time and create more memories with them. As my great-grandfather passed away, and my great-grandmother has dementia.

We never know when it will be too late to make new memories. If you don’t make the effort to see your family, you will regret it one day. Just like how I miss playing dominoes with my great-grandparents.

Spending time with family creates a strong bond foundation. If you are close with your family, you’ll be able to learn more about your background by just sparking up a conversation with a family member. So, forget using websites to figure out your family tree, you’ll be able to learn all about yours just by speaking to your grandparents!

So why should we make an effort to be around family not just this holiday season but every day of the week? Let’s be honest, besides friends, besides the world, family is the only thing we have and you never know what could happen. So always keep your family members close to you because family is a unit.

Happy holidays to you and your family!
