This Is Why Dating A History Buff Isn’t For Everyone

Throughout my entire life, I have only been in 3 relationships.

Each of my ex-boyfriends had their own unique hopes and dreams, but my last ex dreamt of being a historian. Although dating a historian may sound interesting, it can also be rough, and it’s definitely not for everyone.

Sometimes, historians act like they know it all — even when they clearly don’t. One time, my ex-boyfriend and I were talking about World War II and Hitler. We got into an argument over how Hitler died, and he said, “See, I told you! I was right. You should have listened to me because I’m better at history than you are.”  Now, I know I hated history when I was in school, but come on!

Sometimes, I’m right about historical events, too.

Historians also tend to stick with what’s familiar. They sometimes hold old-fashioned views, and they refuse to open up their minds to modern culture.

For instance, my ex-boyfriend wasn’t into any music besides his super old-school country songs. When I tried to introduce him to more modern music or music from my heritage, he would ask me to turn it off and go right back to listening to Johnny Cash. This annoyed me because I’m the type of girl who’s always excited to try new things, but my ex was hung up on what was familiar to him.

Historians can also be huge introverts.

Sometimes, they refuse to go out and have fun, just so they can stay at home and read about Abe Lincoln or Chris Columbus. They may get stuck in a routine of always staying in and reading for fun instead of going out into the world and meeting new people. My boyfriend always kept to himself, but I’m a social butterfly, which caused conflict in our relationship.

Dating a historian can be wonderful if you love debating about historical events, remembering the past, and staying in every weekend, but it was not for me. I’d much rather date a modern man who’s respectful of my views — and is always down to take me on a fun night out.
