Why I Have A Love-Hate Relationship With Halloween Attractions

Halloween has always been a dreadful time of year for me.

It’s not because I don’t like the holiday altogether; I love sneaking candy and dressing up in costumes.

I hate the holiday mostly because of the Halloween attractions that are always around, like haunted houses. Halloween Horror Night is also a nightmare because of my unique limitations (When people scare me, my body reacts more than most people’s, and I jump, which embarrasses me). Despite the fact that I try every year to have fun on Halloween, I can never seem to enjoy myself like most people my age.

Another reason why I hate Halloween attractions is that people rave about them like they’re the greatest thing ever, but they’re not all that. Every year, we expect our Halloween hangouts to be different, but it’s the same, old thing every time. There are always ghosts, bloody hands and feet, and people jumping out at me (which is not fun, especially considering how my body reacts). Seeing the same sights every year gets boring.

Can’t anyone make a haunted house that’s fresh and different?

Still, even though Halloween’s not my favorite, it’s not completely terrible. There’s so much I love about Halloween attractions, too, especially the memories I’ve made there. Once, a few years ago, my childhood neighbor came from out of state, and we decided to go to a haunted house.  A person dressed as “IT” popped out at her, and she screamed like someone was trying to kill her. She ran to the car so damn quickly that she forget to open her car door, and she wound up bumping into her car! Even though I hate getting scared myself, Halloween brings me a twisted sort of joy because I love seeing other people get scared out of their pants!

As much as I hate Halloween attractions, Halloween itself gives me hope that one day, I’ll be able to enjoy the frights without jumping and feeling too scared.

For now, though, watch out, because I’ll be the friend who’s doing all the scaring.
