Pineapple Jack-o’-lanterns Are The Newest Halloween Trend & We Love It

Move over pumpkins! There is a new “spooky” fruit trending for October. You may have seen it on Facebook, Insta, or maybe your friend snapped you a picture. This fruit could be taking over Halloween. Since I was a teenager, one of my Halloween traditions has been carving jack-o-lanterns. It was a surprise to me to find people posting photos on Instagram of pineapples as an alternative to jack-o-lanterns. After browsing social media, it looks like pineapple jack-o-lanterns are a great decoration at parties, particularly if you’re serving piña coladas.

You probably reading this and saying “no way”.

Pineapples might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Halloween, but it turns out this tropical fruit works well as an alternative to the traditional pumpkin jack-o’-lantern. While the prickly exteriors of a pineapple mean the carving options are quite limited, the carving process is not too difficult.

If you’re thinking about tackling this project, here are six easy steps to carving a pineapple jack-o-lantern:

    1. You will need to chop off the top of the pineapple. Slice off the stem—make a straight cut through the fruit about an inch below the top—and set it aside for later.
    1. Use the knife to carefully cut and score the fruit.
    1. Use the spoon to scoop out the inside.
    1. Pat the interior dry with the paper towel.
    1. Carving time! When carving a pineapple jack-o-lantern, a sharp paring knife is the best tool to use and works very well. A pineapple is actually way easier to cut through than a pumpkin. The only tricky part is seeing your work. Hint: To see your work use the thorns on the pineapple to track your design.
  1. Switch on the battery-operated tea light and place it inside the fruit, then put the top (aka your pineapple’s spiky “hair”) back in its original spot. Let it glow!

These are the six steps to carve a pineapple-jack-o-lantern. Keep in mind pineapple jack-o-lanterns may not last as long as pumpkin jack-o-lanterns but the sweet aroma of the pineapple does smell pretty good. Move over, pumpkins—a new fruit is taking over this Halloween.

If you want to try different Halloween decor, a pineapple jack-o’-lantern may be it!

If trying the pineapple jack-o-lantern sparks an urge to experiment this Halloween, pepper and avocado jack-o-lanterns can be done too.
