8 Emo Songs You’ll Never Forget From Our Angsty Youth

If you didn’t have an “emo phase” as a young teenager, your lying. We all thought skinny jeans, shaggy hair, all black clothes, black nail polish and guyliner was attractive. And because of these little crushes we found ourselves in an endless pit of discovering underrated bands who created the genre of emo music.

These 8 emo songs are ones you’ll never forget as long as you’ll live.

Sugar, We’re Going Down – Fall Out Boy

This was actually voted best emo song on many websites for being the actual best, but FOB defines this era of our lives. Plus they had Pete Wentz in their band, and he hasn’t lost his good looks to this day! (You’d be lying if part of you said you mainly liked this group because you thought Pete was hot).

Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been – Relient K

Their album Mhm Yeah is still one of my favourites to listen to because it produced some wicked material, including this banger. They still go under the radar in the industry but sum up our teenage angst to perfection.

I Write Sins, Not Tragedies – Panic! At the Disco

It would be rude if I didn’t include this song because it too was voted one of the greatest emo songs of all time. While the members of PATD have all left except for frontman and longtime crush Brendon Urie, they still remain one of the longest-running emo bands!

Misery Business – Paramore

Every woman wanted to be Hayley Williams because she represented every young woman who listened to this genre. She gave us a voice and we’ll continue to use it to sing along to their songs, dammit!

Miss Murder – AFI

The music video was weird, the singer looked totally different from their other videos and it had a dark but lively vibe. What wasn’t there to love about it? (Plus it gave all of us a chance to use the name Miss Murder in any online usernames).

Welcome to the Black Parade – My Chemical Romance

The piano keys still give you chills, doesn’t it? MCR was probably the most prominent group we can think of that best describes our emo music loving phase. Other notable mentions include Helena and I’m Not Okay (I Promise), because they are extremely underrated and sick!

The Kill – Thirty Seconds to Mars

Who would have thought that frontman Jared Leto would move on to be an Academy Award-winning actor on top of having a successful music career? He was hot in guyliner, had a sexy voice and some deep lyrics. The guys a total legend.

Face Down – Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

I’d like to consider them a one-hit wonder in the genre but it doesn’t excuse the fact that this was a firey song full of upbeat tempos, a killer screamo solo and a catchy tune our parents could actually tolerate if we sang it out loud. I wish they gained more popularity in the long run.

See? You totally recognize at least 7 of these songs! I hope this list persuades you to revisit your musical youth and relisten to the songs that used to define your Tumblr page and twitter profiles. Live long and rawr, my fellow past emo lovers!
