6 Things You Know To Be True As A Morning Dove Or A Night Owl

There are two types of people in this world: morning doves and night owls. Sure, you could totally lie to yourself and say something like, “Nah, I’m really neither,” or, “I’m both!” Okay, statistically speaking, you might have the occasional morning where songbirds pull back your curtains as you gracefully rise out of bed, but it’s about as rare as successfully plugging in a USB on the first try. For you gods and goddesses born as morning doves, the world admires you while quietly envying you from beneath the covers.

If you find yourself in a quandary as to which one you are, here are 6 comparisons to help you discover which one is your spirit animal:

  1. How you wake up.

If you’ve got an alarm clock app that makes you solve a myriad of puzzles, you’re probably a night owl. As a creature of darkness, you’re definitely already dreaming about hitting the pillow later while slamming the crap out of the snooze button. On the other hand, if you’re a morning dove, you maybe snooze once at the most or sometimes even beat your alarm clock to the punch. If you have the ability to get dressed on two feet with both eyes open instead of sliding down the wall in a stupor, you’re probably a morning dove.

  1. Your use of/dependence on caffeine.

I have a coworker who vehemently declares herself a morning dove. Coincidentally, one cup of coffee is enough to turn her into a trembling Chihuahua in her cubicle for at least 6 hours. On the other hand, I could have 6 cups of coffee and still be sleeping with my eyes open in the morning staff meeting. So, if your trusty sidekick is a bottomless cup o’ joe, yet we can still find you drooling somewhere at a traffic light, you might be a night owl.

  1. How approachable you are before 9 AM.

As a night owl, it’s completely safe to say that I have no soul before 9 AM. If you so much as glance in my direction and I’m awake enough to notice, I will give you my back – unless you’re my boss, in which case I’ll give you a heavily forced good morning grunt. You beautiful morning doves are sweet and I envy your energy levels. But for the love of baby Jesus, don’t expect a night owl to return your chipper smiles and compliments until almost lunch time. It’s not physically possible for us. You’re lucky we’ve got matching socks on. I won’t lie, I’ve went to work with two different (but similar) shoes on and didn’t notice until I was on my way home.

  1. How and when you are most productive.

If you’ve ever had to stay late at work because you just have too much left to do at the end of the day and you know you’ll feel motivated when the windows grow dark, your night owl side might be peaking. On the other hand, if you leave yourself a hefty to do list for the following morning, you might be a morning dove who will be ready to tackle everything and anything first thing in the morning. The same applies to when you like to tackle that long list of to-do tasks at home too!

  1. When you make plans.

By this point in life, my friends know when to make prospective plans with me and while they know how much I love them, they certainly know that I will not be up in the early cafe hours to meet up. If your favorite outing is Sunday Brunch, you can’t hide your morning dove and the choir that comes with it. Traveling on the other hand, depends on the trip; if a road trip begins while it’s still dark, I’ll lead the way, but if we have to get on the road by 5 AM, I’ll be in the back with the luggage… totally keeping my eyes wide open.

  1. Your bedtime reveals all.

Now the truth behind your bedtime is where your true spirit animal lies. If you have everything together for the following day and you’re generally ready for bed by 9 PM, high chances have it that you’re a morning dove if you haven’t figured that part out just yet. Now, if you’re anything like me and you would rather explore the town or stay up into the wee hours of the morning writing or watching random YouTube videos, you’re definitely a night owl.

Hopefully, for those of you that didn’t know where you belonged, you now know. Although it’s probably safe to assume there are loads more night owls than morning doves, you doves keep doing you. After all, someone has to keep running the coffee pot for us night owls.
