To The Friend I Never Knew I Needed

I thought I was doing fine with who was in my life. I was content. I had everything I needed. My support system was adequate. It was comfortable. I didn’t think I cared to add anyone else into my life. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very open to meeting new people and putting myself out there, but it’s easier said than done to actually let these new people into your world, never mind having to put your trust in them. The reason it might not be so simple is because most are set in their ways. Most are comfortable. Most don’t feel the need to step outside their comfort zone. That is not me by any means, but it wasn’t until I met you I knew you were going to be my anyway friend.

I’ll never forget the first words out of your mouth at the baby shower we were both at.

“Okay, so where’s the wine?” in your cute Irish accent.

My head turned so quick, I think I almost strained my neck.

That (obviously) is what instantly grabbed my attention! But as we got acquainted and started talking, we couldn’t shut up. It could’ve been the wine, but we were blabbering on like we’d known each other for years.

Since that day, we made plans to hang out together and your charismatic, positive, absolutely kind hearted energy all came shining through. I knew right then and there that you were the kind of person I wanted around me. To push me to do better things. To seek happiness in the littlest of things. To laugh about anything and everything. To smile more and to appreciate more.

The thing is, it’s hard to meet genuinely kind people nowadays. I am a firm believer in everything happening for a reason, and I’m happy everything fell into place and we had the opportunity to meet. I’m glad we were both at that same baby shower. And I’m even gladder you share a love for wine like I do. I’m grateful that you came into my life and made it brighter because you were what was missing without me even knowing it.

We’ve been pretty inseparable since we met. You’re my go-to girl for literally everything. You deal with my 16 messages in a row, my crazy ideas for a night out, my pestering you about outfit coordination, my asking of where we can meet to drink our faces off, my personal therapist, my motivator, and someone I hold so close to my heart.

So when I say you’re my anyway friend, I mean that you love me anyway. You love me in spite of my flaws, you take me for what I am and build me up where I need it and you make me want to strive to be a better person. And I think we could all use a little bit of that. A little unexpected. A little out of the ordinary. A little push. A little motivation. A genuine friend.

So I wanted to thank you. For loving me anyway. For being there for me anyway. For pointing out when I’m in the wrong. For being my support system. For helping me see the other side of the spectrum. For building me up, instead of tearing me down. We could all use a little more people like you in our lives. So with that, I thank you.
