What The First Month Back At School Really Feels Like

It’s that time of year again. Time to head back to the institution that will hopefully one day get you an assigned parking slot. It’s a new school year and it’s going to be a new you. So what can you expect during your first month?

Week 1 : AKA Syllabus Week AKA The Only Chill Week In 4 Months

Your trip to Staples the weekend before goes a little something like this. 4 packs of no. 2’s, 15 highlighters, a bedazzle machine, and everything in Aisle 9. After all, a great mind must be equipped with even greater stationery.

How to spot a freshman 101: Lanyard around the neck, you keep hearing, “Back in high school…” and the campus map is like their fifth limb. They show up to every frat party on campus that seems “lit.” Also, that fake ID is not fooling anyone.

Week 2:

Things are about to get real. You know it’s coming, but that workload hits you like a truck during week 2. That one class you took as a GPA booster, well let’s just say not much boosting will be happening. At least the TA is hot, and the professor is definitely going to get a smoking chilli on rate my prof. At this point, you’re so behind that even you don’t know what you are behind on.

Week 3:

Showing up to a class with fifteen minutes left. I’m never late, everyone else is simply early. Your dedication should be applauded, you could’ve just skipped.

Week 4:

Even the weather perfectly reflects your inner turmoil. Come to think of it, you probably don’t even know what month it is. You have six classes but only show up to 3. Why you ask? Because you’re skipping to catch up on the classes you skipped.

The first month back has come and gone. You stopped trying to look even remotely presentable. I think this shirt has been on the floor for only three weeks, perfectly acceptable. Your stock of Ramen is depleting at an alarming rate.

Those seven clubs you signed up for? What clubs? Wait, they have meetings?? Heading back to school depends a whole lot on your attitude, you can embrace some things and choose to forget some others. Kick back, grab some free USBs and pens from clubs trying to recruit you. Life can change faster than the blink of an eye, enjoy not fully being an adult while you can.
