7 Reasons It’s So Damn Hard To Date In College

Dating, while it seems great, can be exhausting and requires a good amount of time. The overwhelming feeling of balancing classes and extracurricular activities, might just be enough to get in the way of having a love life in college. Between finding the time or money to go out, to finding the perfect outfit, I can see why people opt-out of dating in college. Here are 7 real truths on why dating in college is so damn challenging:

1. College is time-consuming.
Classes take up half of my life. Between the amount of hours in a week I am in lecture, to the amount of homework and papers that are due each week, I can barely find time to feed myself, let alone go out on a date. No offense boys, but I’d rather spend a Friday night in, eating a pizza for one and staring at McDreamy, than go out with you.

2. You’ll get jealous, even if you don’t want to.
Hello Green-eyes. It is totally okay to have female friends. And, it’s totally okay for you to go out drinking with said female friends. I understand the “study dates” that you are having, but I will probably still be jealous and it’s just not a feeling that I enjoy.

3. Word travels fast.
If you meet this person in one of your classes, or in a club/organization that you both are involved with, people are going to know every little detail about everything. Nothing will be private because nothing in college ever is. Sorry, I’m just not the type to kiss and tell.

4. You are surrounded by people.
Yes, I know, isn’t that what college is for? Now, instead of spending all of your hours with your roommates and classmates, that time is instead going straight to hanging out with your new boo. That means the very little time that you had to yourself is gone, and I don’t think I’m ready to give that up just yet.

5. We are all broke college students.
I don’t know how one finds the money to go out for dinner each weekend or see a movie. At this point in my dating game, I feel like the only way to keep things new and fresh is to go out and spend money, and I am SO not ready to be even more broke than I already am.

6. The in-between-stage.
There is a stage of what we might be. Are we just two friends hanging out all the time? Are we casually seeing each other and other people? Is this serious? Is this a friends with benefits relationship? The unknown is plain scary, and the not knowing a relationship status is terrifying.

7. Long Distance.
I go to a school where everyone is from the area, while I am the black sheep that lives on the opposite side of the state. Yes, it’s only a day trip, but, once breaks come around, I’ll be entering a long distance relationship and we all know how hard those can be.

While dating sounds like fun and there are a lot of pros to having a relationship, the amount of energy and commitment needed to date in college is just not for me. From not knowing what our status is, to having everyone know all the details about us, dating in college is genuinely hard. These four years are meant for creating memories and strong bonds between friends, I would rather experience it all, then give it up to have a relationship.
