Mother Knows Best: 30 Life Lessons We All Learn From Our Moms

Look, Ma!

What’s a girl to do without her mother? From late night phone calls about how many Advil is too many to asking how to properly write a check, moms are always there to help us up after each and every tumble. Throughout the trials and tribulations of life, their maternal instincts (and badass advice) seem to be constantly save our sorry butts from whatever stupid mistakes we’re making. With Thanksgiving having come and gone, it’s only fair to pay homage to the woman who made you exactly who you are today. Moms are magic, and the following tidbits of advice are hard evidence:

  1. Be nice or leave.
  2. If you want something done, do it yourself.
  3. A mistake made once is a mistake. A mistake repeated is a conscious choice.
  4. Pets are family.
  5. Nobody sees you the way that you see you.
  6. No expectations, no disappointments.
  7. Sometimes, you just have to curse.
  8. Never expect people to do for you what you would do for them.
  9. Manners are important.
  10. Hold yourself to a high standard, because settling is a fool’s game.
  11. Always know where the bathroom is ahead of time.
  12. Know when to let go.
  13. It’s okay to have a little chocolate from time to time.
  14. Believe someone when they tell you that you’re beautiful.
  15. You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs, baby.
  16. They always come back.
  17. Help people who need it.
  18. Be patient with yourself.
  19. Shut up and listen.
  20. Always look forward instead of backward.
  21. Know your people.
  22. Don’t take sh*t from anybody.
  23. People, events, and things are blessings or lessons; sometimes they are both.
  24. Genuinely good people do exist.
  25. Everybody doesn’t need to know everything.
  26. Let him miss you.
  27. It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
  28. Sh*t happens.
  29. Accept the compliment, even if you don’t agree with it.
  30. Always smile, even at strangers.

Moms kick the most ass while still remaining the most angelic creatures around. They are graceful yet bitchin’, a rare and triumphant balance of strength and femininity. Moms across the world, without your presence, how would we possibly know how to juggle a breakup, four essays, and the stomach flu all at the same time? Exactly – we wouldn’t. Thanks to all the mothers out there for showering us with wisdom and telling us how long to boil eggs. You’re the real MVPs.
