Why Being A Diva Doesn’t Make You A B*tch

DiŸ-ŸŸva: noun, someone with particular tastes, who knows what they want and usually knows how to get it. Occasionally over-dramatic and always fabulous in every way. Also known as the female version of a hustler.

I’ve been called a diva more than once. By family members, boyfriends and my besties. It usually comes after I insist on going to Starbucks over Dunkin’ Donuts, kick everyone out of the living room because I have to see the finale of my show or when I’m generally being over-dramatic (which happens pretty much daily). It used to bother me a lot because usually the word “diva” has a negative connotation. But then I realized being a diva is not only okay, it’s fabulous.

Being a diva means more than just being picky or stubborn about what you want. It’s really about having standards and refusing to settle. Most of my divaness comes from knowing what I like and just wanting the best of the best. Sure ‘Bucks is more expensive than Dunkin’ and sometimes I drive out of my way to get it, but if I’m going to drink coffee, I want it to be good coffee. If being a devoted Gold Card member is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

As for being over-dramatic…I could try to pretend I’m not but anyone who knows me would immediately call my bluff. I’m emotional. Sometimes my feelings cause me to throw a fit (complete with whining and complaining) because something doesn’t go my way. Or I over exaggerate that the world is ending just because I lost my debit card and I really wanted that ONE dress that will totally sell out if I don’t buy it right now. All I have to say is, if you’re going to feel something, might as well feel it full force. Go big or go home. Let it all out because you’re definitely going to feel better afterwards. Plus your overblown reaction will probably motivate you to figure out another way to get what you really want. Being a diva is all about determination.

And if someone is classified as a diva, it probably means that they exude some sort of fabulous confidence that may be borderline cocky. So what? My motto is, “if you’ve got it, might as well flaunt it.” A little confidence never hurt anyone and you should feel like you’re fabulous because that’s what you are. FABULOUS.

Even if you’re not called a diva on a normal basis, everyone has their diva moments. It happens. To quote the wise words of Beyoncé, “A true diva is graceful, and talented, and strong, and fearless, and brave.” Amen, Queen Bey.
