10 Lessons To Live By In Your 20s

Somewhere between the years of being stuck as a teenager and being forced to have your life together, you have the wonderful years of your twenties. Created for a smooth transition to adulthood, these are the years that meant for learning, experiencing and growing.

Ah, the selfish years of your twenties – they really are the best times of your life. You find out who you are, what you want out of life, and the people who mean the most to you. Although mistakes are inevitable, your twenties are made for messing up and learning lessons. We’re in the middle of not being ready for a house and kids but finding it completely acceptable to spend all of our money on brunch.

As we inch closer to the terrifying age of thirty, where it’s unacceptable to answer ‘I don’t know’ to major life questions, there are a few things that we learn along the way to make our lives a little easier.

1. Fail as much as you possibly can.

To fail means you’re taking chances, and taking chances will never be as easy as it is in your twenties. Take advantage of every experience, even if people tell you that you’re crazy.

2. Don’t worry about having a plan.

There are so many paths leading into your thirties, so don’t be afraid to veer off the path that everyone else is taking. Contrary to how some people come off, no one really knows what they’re doing. Embrace the unknown, and don’t worry about what others are doing.

3. Call your family at least once a week.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in your own life and forget about the people who used to be around you every day. Eventually it’ll be too late to rekindle relationships with siblings and other family members that you tend to forget, so don’t let them slip away.

4. Understand that the world isn’t judging you.

When we’re in our teens, we think that everyone is judging the way we dress and act. But when you realize that the world doesn’t actually care about what you do, you’ll start becoming the person that you want to be.

5. Love yourself first.

Whether it’s appreciating your positive qualities or accepting your body for how it is, there’s no better feeling than truly loving yourself. People tend to put their energy into loving other people, but you learn in your twenties that at the end of the day you’re the only person you’ve got.

6. Don’t feel guilty about buying things that make you happy.

Of course, I mean in moderation, but don’t ever feel bad about buying yourself that bottle of wine or bouquet of flowers. Every now and then you need to do something for yourself that makes you happy. Whether it’s splurging on a new outfit or picking up your favorite gossip magazine, don’t feel bad about the things that make you happy.

7. Follow your passion and not someone else’s.

It can be easy, especially with social media, to get wrapped up in someone else’s idea of the future. Find your passion and stick with it, no matter how many people doubt you. It may not be easy but it’ll absolutely be worth it in the end.

8. Therapy isn’t just for crazy people.

Everyone gets overwhelmed at times, and it’s unhealthy to keep those feelings bottled up. Whether your form of therapy comes from a bottle of wine and a best friend or talking to a professional, don’t ever be afraid to get the help you need.

9. Don’t force yourself into love.

Just because people are growing up and getting into relationships doesn’t mean that you have to too. Life isn’t a checklist, and there’s no age restriction on life accomplishments. Take your time to figure out what’s best for you, and don’t let anyone pressure you into something you’re not ready for.

10. You get out of life what you put into it.

When you’re willing to take chances, make memories and stop worrying about a plan, life will start to reward you. There’s no right or wrong way to live life, but when you stop sweating the small stuff, you truly start living.

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on us in our 20s. Although we’ll never really know all the secrets to life, it’s nice to know that we’re getting closer to finding out how to live our own to the fullest.

  1. I think that yes, we should be able to fail in our 20s and that is alright, but we should also strive to succeed as much as we can. The more success we can obtain in our 20s can set us up for a happier 30, flirty and thriving 🙂
