The release of a new Disney movie has always prompted fans of all ages to swarm to the nearest movie theater. Disney princesses not only capture box office numbers, but also the hearts of audiences across the world. The structure of Disney classics tend to surround the idea of a prince saving his princess. With the new release of Disney’s Frozen, this fairytale idea is being transformed to a modern-age story that instills lessons to be learned by all ages.
Frozen is not only an entertaining feature that everyone should experience, but also an inspirational film that surrounds two important themes: self-acceptance and familial love. Here are the top five lessons I personally learned from Frozen that makes me want to watch the movie again and again.
1. Love and marriage are not based on locking eyes with a guy for two seconds
In the past, Disney has illustrated images of princesses marrying their the prince who kisses them or the idea that a princess should marry the man who she has only known for a short period of time. [spoiler] The movie doesn’t end with a marriage.
2. You can save yourself
Don’t get me wrong, I can be quite the hopeless romantic too, but I have to give Disney major props for producing a movie that revolves around two princesses who save themselves.
3. Self-acceptance.
When Elsa finally escapes to the mountains, we can see a transition from her shy, cold, timid self to a confident and strong woman. Lately, Disney has increased their focus on the battle with bullying issues. With a mainstream feature like Frozen, the power house was able to dive into the importance of self-acceptance and embracing one’s differences.
4. True love comes in many forms, including your family
Throughout the film, one can see that the love between Elsa and her younger sister Anna is strong. While Anna initially doesn’t understand why her sister is cold (pun intended), she realizes the sacrifices Elsa has made to protect Anna from any future accidents. If you watch the film, you will also see that their love is what saves the kingdom.
5. Redefining the Princess
Disney, I will applaud you again and again for this. Instead of merely illustrating the princesses as poised and delicate, Frozen creates two powerful princesses who fight obstacles to save their beloved kingdom. In the past year alone, we have seen female role models such as Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer become prime examples that society is finally moving in the right direction.
Regardless of where you are in your life, Frozen is a film you need to watch. The movie is a great experience to share with your family, friends, and significant others.
