7 Things We Did As Kids That Gen Z Will Never Understand

Let’s face it, we’re getting old, and we did things a lot differently when we were kids than what kids of today do. They have everything so accessible to them and have so many more luxuries that we wish we could have had when we were their age. The new generation don’t realize what we used to have to do as kids, and to be honest, it would probably make them think we are prehistoric.

  1. Sending Chain Emails In Fear of the Consequence

Remember when you just got your first (and very embarrassing) email and you couldn’t wait to start talking to all your friends? Well, we would also always forward those “send to 15 people or you will get stabbed in your sleep” emails to literally everyone we knew; older family included. (We must’ve been so much more annoying back then).

2. Collect Animations on MSN

MSN was a solid phase that was the original way kids of our generation could communicate. People would choose the most cliche song lyrics for their status and picking your profile picture was hard. But in order to get some cool animations (otherwise known as gif like emojis) you had to wait for someone to send them to you and would save them.

3. Print Out Directions When Going Somewhere

Before the world of GPS or having a ton of data, we had to rely on using our at-home computer and printer, go on MapQuest and print off directions before going somewhere new. It was a pain in the butt if you were in a rush but sometimes the directions were better than what a GPS would give you today.

4. Having to Press Numbers on a Phone Numerous Times to Text

It would take some serious thumb power and a lot of patience but we used to have to click each number a certain amount of times to get a particular letter. It was frustrating but once Blackberry’s came out, we were stuck doing that for the longest time.

5. Having to Type in ‘www.’  Before Wanting to Use The Internet

Back in the day, you had to know what website you wanted to use before you could go on it because back then the internet didn’t automatically know where you wanted to go. One little mess up and you had to start all over.

6. We Had to Wait Until The End of the Day to Talk to Our Friends

There was no way of getting around this before you had a phone… Or could even get data or wifi on your phone. So you would go to school (or wherever you were going) and had to wait until 5 p.m. to talk to your friends online or to use Twitter or Facebook.

7. We Needed Batteries to Listen to Our Music

In the early days of our lives, we required either AA or AAA batteries to listen to our music on various music devices such as our discman (a portable CD player where you had to carry your collection around with you to get a variety) or your MP3 Player. So if it died, you were screwed.

There are so many other weird things I could add to this list that would make me seem like a dinosaur (such as going to channel 3 in order to use your VHS to watch your movie or record a show to watch later, or having to rent movies from stores). And for those millennials who are reading this, you’re probably going down memory lane, forgetting we used to actually do that. Man, the glow up to adulthood has been really nice!
