Growing up sucks and the real world (the adult world) is hard. Maybe the adult world is difficult, but there are many things that come with being an adult that are actually pretty great. Sure there are a lot of things we have to deal with that aren’t the most fun, like bills and jobs, but that doesn’t mean it has to make life terrible. Growing up is really a privilege, especially in our society. We have so many opportunities ahead of us that sometimes we are overwhelmed by all that we can do.
You get to choose what you are a part of
Want to go to college? You can. Want to find a job? You can. Want to do nothing? To an extent, you can. There are so many things out there that you aren’t forced to do one thing. You have the opportunity to choose. As a child, you don’t have that privilege. You have to go to school. You have to do what your parents say. You don’t get to do whatever you want. As an adult, you can.
You get to choose your friends
As a kid, you are basically limited to who you go to school with. Sometimes it’s who lives close to you because your parents won’t let you go any further than down the road. Your friends are determined by who you sit by at school or at lunch. When you’re an adult, you get to choose for yourself. You can have friends that live an hour away or across the country. No one can stop you.
You get to choose your passion and career
When it comes to college and choosing a major that is usually up to you. Most people typically don’t have people deciding this for them. You get to choose what you do and what path you take. It may not be the easiest decision, but it is yours to make. That is something to be grateful for.
You get to choose your clothes
As a kid, all your clothes have to be approved by your parents. As an adult, you can wear whatever you want. Whether you get embarrassed or not is up to you. Ultimately, you don’t have to wear what your parents pick out. It’s all up to you.
You get to choose how you spend your free time
You get to take up any hobbies your heart desires. Or you can sit at home and watch Netflix. Whatever you want to do is completely up to you. You can eat, shower, sleep whenever you want. No one can tell you what to do with your time anymore.
Sometimes growing up can suck. But there are so many wonderful things about growing up that we can’t forget. It comes with so many life decisions teach us independence, strength, and confidence. We get to make our own choices about so many things that we didn’t have the opportunity to decide when we were children. If nothing else remember, growing up means you never have to live through middle school ever again.
