This Is What It’s Like To Watch People Give Up On You

Imagine letting people into your life. Letting your guard down. Letting yourself become vulnerable.

Imagine spending so much time with these people that you finally decide to let them know about the monsters in your closet; your mental illnesses.

Now, imagine having faith that what you’ve revealed won’t change anything, but then watch these people slowly fade out of your life one by one.

That’s the reality of watching people give up on you. The primary problem here is that they don’t understand. They say they do; they seem like they grasp the concept, but in reality, they don’t at all.

They don’t understand what it’s like to live your struggles. In their eyes, you’re not trying hard enough. They’ve given you a moment, a day, a week and you should be better by now. You’re so negative. Why can’t you just look at the bright side of things? Why can’t you just stop worrying about things that make you anxious?

The truth is that I think these things myself. I’m not patient with myself. I see the effort that I’m putting in; I see the how hard I am working; I see the time I’m spending. Yet, I’m not seeing any results and it makes me wonder if things are ever going to get better. Why haven’t things gotten better?

But what makes it worse? Watching you give up on me.

I’ve watched friends slowly dip out of my life. They avoid texting me. They quit inviting me out. My Snapchats go unanswered. Seeing this makes it even harder to fight it. Don’t they understand how hard it was for me to admit my illnesses to them? How much strength did it take to tell them that I wasn’t okay? To try to seem like I was pulling myself together as I went through the hells and horrors of finding a medication that worked for me?

I’ve watched my coworkers slowly cut me less and less slack. They gave me a day off and that should be enough, but it’s not. I’m grateful for the help I’ve received from them, but sometimes, it isn’t enough. Depression and anxiety aren’t something that goes away by staying in bed for a day.

It makes people uncomfortable. I don’t know why because they’re not the ones who are living their lives trying to power through each day as people watch on in pity. I don’t want your pity. I’m not fragile. I don’t need you to babysit me. I didn’t ask you to carry my baggage for me. I just want your support. I want you to tell me that you love me; that you’re here for me. And I want you to mean it.

Being friends with someone with a mental illness is no different than being friends with someone who doesn’t have one. The only difference is that sometimes, you need to be a little bit more supportive when it matters and sometimes, you need to try a little harder to understand someone other than yourself.

I’m extremely grateful for the ones who have stuck by my side through thick and thin, and not just when it’s convenient for them. To them, I say this: thank you. Ask me questions. Talk to me. Don’t treat me like I’m fragile but also don’t act like my illness isn’t there. Educating yourself about it is the most important thing you could do for our relationship. Your friendship and support mean the world to me.

And what I have to say to those who’ve given up on me? I hope you never in your life have to experience mental illness firsthand. And if you do, I hope you find the support in others that I couldn’t find in you. Because it feels so shitty to watch people give up on you and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

  2. Not just friends. I lost my few remaining friends years ago. Now all I have is my parents, neither of whom know what to do anymore. I’m a burden to them. They’ve both said “I don’t care anymore. Do what you have to do” when I was at my lowest and just needed a hug. I didn’t even really feel sadness in those moments, just pure devastation and heartbreak. Almost a numbness. Now I have absolutely no one in the world. No family, no friends, no support whatsoever. All I have is myself and I loathe myself. All day every day my thoughts are just harassment and abuse directed towards myself. “Why am I like this? You pushed everyone away and now you’re all alone. Good job idiot, now if you’d just successfully die you’d have done one thing right. When you die remember that everyone will sigh a sigh of relief. No one will miss you and everyone will throw a party celebrating the fact that you finally are gone. You have no purpose in life except to be a miserable failure. Just kill yourself already”. All day everyday these thoughts get repeated. I can’t live in my own head anymore. I have to die. I don’t know what I did to deserve any of this. I tried to be s good person but it wasn’t enough. The universe decided that I was a mistake and every waking moment is a reminder of that fact.

      This sounds like a terribly tough situation and I’m genuinely sorry to hear it. Seems like you’re caught in a cycle of negative events, emotions, and thoughts.
      I know it’s difficult to picture things ever changing. Conflict or turmoil cycles get to spinning pretty quickly. This is especially true as they become more and more sturdy. Each unfortunate event, wave of depression, or negative self-thought seems to intensify the cycles’ velocity and therefore diminishes hope of escaping. Eventually we either sink into our seat and except that we’re doomed, or we give up all together and jump.
      But there’s another way out, I promise. It’s not the easiest of tasks, but the other options aren’t either and the outcomes are far less positive.
      First of all, the problem is not us. I mean, it’s always a little us – and it’s all good. Often times it winds up being our uniquenesses that are causing some of the issues we face. Does this mean we ought to strive to eradicate our individuality? That’s a personal choice/up to you (nice to have options ‍♂️). But there’s also a way to recognize and embrace those qualities in ourselves. Once you embrace the quality and begin to explore it, you may find it more difficult to be so hard on yourself.
      For instance, you’re a good writer as far as I can tell. In your post you did well to not embellish and were still able to paint a vivid picture of your experiences. That’s not as easy as you may think it is. It’s unique. And it’s also a great tool in keeping your reader engaged.
      I’d also encourage you to speak kindly to yourself whenever you can. You can even start with little things paying attention to words and phrases like “I can’t” or “I’m so bad at this”. They’re seemingly harmless, but our minds are especially sensitive to unconstructive criticism. And believe it or not it doesn’t make much of a difference whether that criticism is coming from an outside source (an asshole) or if it’s internal dialogue. Our minds and bodies react poorly to it regardless, thus continuing the cycle.
      I hope you find whatever it is you need to be happy. You may have already made strides since your initial post Either way, good luck to ya!

    • Thank you for letting read anywhere the exact words in my heart that I hear in my head that I say to myself every 10 minutes of every day… And now I’m so scared that is not he’ll and if I die it will be worse than this. Kinda catch 22. Least seeing my words here was a second of normal a second of I’m not alone for real. Can u imagine if there are more that are the same – think they shou;d round us all up and put us away they don’t have to be pulled down by us and disappoint them anymore. Kinda a nice fantasy maybe all together we’d stop hating ourselves anymore. Nice thought eh? Too bad far tales don’t exist. Thanks for that moment. Take care
