5 Times You Should Always Tell Your BFF The Cold, Hard Truth

My best friend is like a sister to me. She is my support system when I feel like the world is against me. The reason why we are so close is because we literally share everything with each other. Over the years I realized that honesty is the basis of our friendship. A lot of people say that little white lies can’t hurt. At the same time, a lie that might seem insignificant to you might be a big deal to your friend. Here are five lies that should definitely be avoided in order to maintain a healthy friendship.

  1. When your BFF’s boyfriend hits on you, or does anything remotely inappropriate

This can be an awkward topic but it is necessary to bring up if this does happen. The fear that your BFF won’t believe you or that she can get mad at you for the truth can be intimidating. But if you really are besties it is a must to tell her the truth about that two-timing boyfriend of hers. This is also valid for when your friend’s potential boyfriend or crush is hitting on another girl. Someone who is blinded by lust or love has a hard time seeing or accepting the truth. Your responsibility, as the best friend, is to be the voice of reason. Your BFF does not need to be wasting her time on someone who is obviously not worthy.

  1. When you feel hurt by something your BFF did

Honesty is the key to any relationship and a friendship is no exception. Don’t tell your best friend that everything is okay when it’s not. Bottling things up will only blow up in your face later on. Your BFF is not a mind reader. Even if she does something that hurts you, she might never realize that it is such a big deal to you unless you speak up. Obviously, your BFF wouldn’t do anything to hurt you on purpose, and if she does then clearly she is not the person you thought she was. Talking it out and making sure you are both on the same page is important in order to maintain a healthy friendship without those hidden grudges that could leave unnecessary scars forever.

  1. When that outfit doesn’t actually look good on her

You owe it to her, to be honest. You have to tell her if those leggings really do need a long sweater to top off the whole outfit or if the color of her dress isn’t the best with her skin tone. At the end of the day, wouldn’t you want to hear the same from your BFF in order to escape wardrobe malfunctions? Even if your best friend gets mad at you, she will quickly come around and realize that you did it for her benefit and not just out of spite.

  1. If you don’t actually feel like hanging out

Your best friend is there for you no matter what, and she deserves the truth. If you don’t feel like hanging out because you still have two seasons of your guilty pleasure show to binge watch, then tell her that. If the problem is much deeper, like you just don’t feel like getting out of bed because you feel down, talk to her too. She is there to listen and to support you. Giving empty promises and excuses could damage any friendship. At the end of the day, no one wants to have a one-sided conversation. If you explain your side of the story to your BFF, I’m sure she will understand.

  1. If you are hanging out with someone they don’t like

Even though it’s difficult to admit that you became friends with someone your best friend does not like, it is one of the most necessary things to tell her. If she finds out that you have been going behind her back on purpose and not telling her it is ten times worse than being upfront from the start. Your BFF should understand where you are coming from. If you go directly to her without sneaking around, you are proving to her that she really is the number one person in your life and that no one else can take her spot. It’s important to make sure that your bestie does not feel like it is necessary for you to hide something so important from her. No one likes to feel betrayed.

Friendship requires a lot of work. The base of any friendship definitely should combine honesty and trust. Your BFF is your adopted family and family is always there for you no matter what. Lying should not be the ultimate response to solving every problem that might come between you two!
