Drop The Spoon: FDA Says Cookie Dough Is Officially Off Limits

In a consumer report that was released Tuesday the FDA cleared up why cookie dough is 100% off limits. We’ve all been told its the eggs, don’t EVER eat raw eggs, but the real culprit is one you would never expect – flour. Damn you flour.

According to the FDA and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, flour can contain bacteria that can cause you to get sick. One of these bacteria, Shiga toxin-producing E.coli 0121, has been making its rounds lately, making close to 40 people sick since December.

So what does this mean for you? Don’t ever ingest anything that has raw flour as the bacteria will not have been killed. Preparing food or processing it (like roasting, frying, microwaving, and baking) are all ways to kill a bacteria that may be lurking in your flour. Always use treated flour and pasteurized eggs where possible.

So there you have it. Even though raw cookie dough is one of the greatest gifts to this planet, just put down the spoon and resist the urge. If you need to have your fix, buy manufactured “cookie dough” products, like cookie butters or cookie dough ice creams. Your body will thank you for it.
