Short Hair, Don’t Care: Why Chopping It All Off Is Unbelievably Sexy

“I’ve never felt so confident as I did with short hair – I felt really good in my own skin.” Emma Watson

I sat in the chair staring in myself at the mirror as my hairdresser, Lisa, stood behind me. With a slight click, the razor came to life buzzing. I closed my eyes as she held it to the back of my neck. And just like that (and 20 minutes of cutting, clipping, and snipping away at my hair), my hair was gone. After a year of pursuing the short hair life, I had sat down with shoulder length hair and left with it kissing my jawline.

Let’s get real: our hair defines who we are. I remember not too long ago having long, mermaid hair with perfect texture and waves. We all have that friend who has a stellar ombré and rocks bod-fitting leather pants. Every day at your 10:25 am class, you secretly hate the girl with the long, pin straight hair that looks miraculously “un-done.” We cling to our long hair like life jackets. But now more than ever is the time to chop it, the time to go after and pursue a short bob or even a pixie cut!

Our hair is a security blanket, in some way or another, to hide parts of our faces. With short hair, you’re baring all. Short hair reveals and accentuates your neck, shoulders, and jawline. For a lot of girls, this look can be incredibly intimidating. I’ve had the same thoughts myself: What if it looks terrible? What if I can’t style it? Fear not – short hair is incredibly addicting and empowering.

Before, I felt pretty. I would style my hair and slick on some lipstick and feel pretty. I got my hair cut short and I feel sexy. I’ve never felt genuinely sexy before. I thought I knew what that felt like, but now I step out and I feel like a whole new woman. Without my face being hidden, I put on my make up and have never felt more beautiful. I don’t put on scarves anymore, because I’m proud of my facial structure. Take charge and possession of yourself and that beautiful face that belongs to you.

Getting a close fitting crop screams sexuality. There is something about a woman who chops her hair off that gives off a powerful vibe. She knows what she wants, she doesn’t need anyone to complete her, and she doesn’t feel obligated to follow all the rules. A girl with short hair makes a statement because she’s unpredictable. Breaking the societal norms is interesting, so be interesting.

With the recent movement of Hollywood starlets cropping what they’ve got (Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, Shailene Woodley), the cropped look has been more popular than ever. Start out by doing subtle cuts that lead up to the final look if that’s easier. Jumping straight into it can be terrifying. After years of torturing your hair by straightening, blow drying, and curling your lengthy locks – your hair is going to love taking a break from the heat!

“I just cut my hair and then it really changed my life. There’s something about having no hair that screams being confident.” Miley Cyrus

P.S. I really did cut all my hair off!
